Simple SEO steps to get your site found on Google

The short answer
SEO means making your website easy for search engines to understand and easy for people to use. Start with clear pages, helpful words, fast loading and a layout that works on phones. Then keep adding useful content.
SEO stands for search engine optimization. It is the work you do so that people find your website when they search on Google or other search engines. You do not need to be an expert to start. This guide shows the steps we follow when we grow websites for businesses and nonprofits.
Step 1: Learn what people search for
Start with your customers, not with tools. Ask what words they use when they look for what you sell. A bakery owner may think "artisan loaves" while customers type "fresh bread near me". Use the customer's words.
- Write down ten questions your customers ask you again and again.
- Type those questions into Google and read the results. See what kind of pages show up.
- Pick one main topic for each page of your website.
Step 2: Give every page one clear job
One page should answer one question. If a page tries to do five jobs, search engines and visitors both get confused.
- Page title: a short, honest name for the page. Keep it under about 60 characters so it is not cut off.
- Main heading: one h1 heading that says what the page is about.
- Description: one or two plain sentences that tell people why to click.
- Web address: short and easy to read, such as /about.
Step 3: Write for people first
Use short sentences and simple words. Answer the question near the top of the page. Then add the details. Use headings so a visitor can scan the page in a few seconds. Add a short description of each picture (called alt text) so everyone can understand it, including people who use screen readers.
Google says it wants to show content that is helpful, reliable and made for people, not content made only to rank. Write about what you really know and do.
Step 4: Make the site fast and easy on phones
Most people search on a phone. If your page is slow or hard to read on a small screen, they leave. Keep pictures small, use a clean layout, make buttons big enough to tap, and test the site on a real phone.
Step 5: Help search engines find your pages
- Link your pages to each other, so every page can be reached from another page.
- Add a sitemap file that lists your pages.
- Create a free Google Search Console account and add your site. It shows which pages are found and any problems.
- Make sure you do not block your own pages by mistake in the robots file.
Step 6: Show that people can trust you
Trust matters a lot. Say who you are, where you work and how to reach you. Add your address, phone number and email. Put your name or your company name on what you write. Share real work, real stories and real reviews from real customers. Link to trusted sources when you share facts.
Step 7: Check and improve every month
SEO is not a one time job. Once a month, open Search Console and look at which searches bring people to you. Improve pages that almost work. Add one new helpful page. Fix broken links. Small steady work beats a big rush.
Do's and don'ts
Do
- Write for real people and answer their questions clearly.
- Give each page its own title, heading and description.
- Add alt text to pictures.
- Keep your site fast and easy to use on a phone.
- Show your address, phone number and who is behind the site.
- Check your results every month and keep improving.
Don't
- Don't repeat the same keyword again and again. It reads badly and does not help.
- Don't copy text from other websites.
- Don't buy cheap links or use fake reviews.
- Don't hide text or tricks from visitors.
- Don't promise results in days. SEO takes time.
- Don't forget about the mobile layout.
Questions people ask
How long does SEO take?
It often takes a few months to see steady results. New sites take longer. Nobody can promise a fixed time, so be careful with anyone who does.
Do I need to pay for SEO?
You can do the basics yourself for free. Many owners pay for help to save time, to fix technical problems and to plan content. The right choice depends on how much time you have.
What is the most important thing for SEO?
Helpful pages that answer real questions, on a site that is fast, safe and easy to use. Everything else supports that.
Do social media posts help SEO?
Social posts can bring visitors and help people know your name. They are not a direct ranking switch, but they support your online presence.
