How to get your website cited in AI answers

The short answer

No one can force an AI tool to quote you. AI tools tend to use pages that are clear, trusted, easy to read and open to crawlers. Write direct answers, show who you are, keep your site fast, and let search and AI crawlers in.

More people now ask AI tools questions instead of searching the old way. When these tools answer, they often show links to the pages they used. Here is how to make your pages a good choice. We keep this guide honest: these steps raise your chances, but they cannot promise a mention.

How AI tools find pages

Some AI tools use a search engine behind the scenes. Others send their own crawlers to read pages. Google says that to appear as a supporting link in its AI features, a page needs to be indexed and eligible to show in Google Search. In other words, good basic SEO is also the base of AI visibility.

Step 1: Let crawlers in

  1. Open your robots.txt file at yourwebsite.com/robots.txt.
  2. Make sure it does not block search crawlers or the AI crawlers you want, such as GPTBot, ClaudeBot and PerplexityBot.
  3. Check each company's own help page for the current crawler names, because names change.
  4. Do not hide your main text behind a login or inside images.

Step 2: Put the answer first

Start a page with a plain answer in one or two sentences. Then explain. Use headings that sound like real questions, such as "How much does a website cost?". Short paragraphs and short lists are easy for people and for machines to read.

Step 3: Show who is behind the page

Add the name of the author or the company, the date you last reviewed the page, and a way to contact you. Explain your own experience. When you share a fact, link to a trusted source. These are the same signs of trust that Google describes as experience, expertise, authority and trust.

Step 4: Use clean page code

Make sure the main text is in the page itself and not loaded later by scripts, because some crawlers do not run scripts. Use real headings, lists and tables. Add structured data, such as Organization, Article and FAQ, so machines can see what each part means.

Step 5: Get mentioned in other places

AI tools learn from the wider web. Keep your business profile the same on your social pages, directories and marketplaces such as Upwork. Share useful posts and videos. When trusted sites talk about you, it helps.

Step 6: Try the llms.txt file as a small extra

An llms.txt file is a plain text summary of your site for AI tools. It is a proposal, and not every tool reads it. Treat it as a small extra and never as a promise. We publish one on this site.

Step 7: Test and learn

Once a month, ask AI tools the questions your customers ask. See which sites they mention. Look at your server or Cloudflare logs to see which crawlers visit. Improve the pages that are close.

Do's and don'ts

Do

  • Put a direct answer at the top of each page.
  • Show the author, the company and the review date.
  • Link to trusted sources for facts.
  • Keep your robots.txt open to the crawlers you want.
  • Use structured data that matches what people can see on the page.
  • Keep your information the same across your profiles.

Don't

  • Don't promise clients or yourself that you will be quoted.
  • Don't stuff pages with keywords.
  • Don't hide text only for machines.
  • Don't copy or rewrite other people's work.
  • Don't write fake reviews or fake experts.
  • Don't block crawlers by accident with a wrong rule.

Questions people ask

Can I pay to be cited by an AI tool?

No. You cannot buy a place in an answer. Be careful with anyone who sells a guaranteed mention.

Is AI optimization different from SEO?

It overlaps a lot. Clear, helpful, trusted pages that are easy to crawl help in both. AI tools add a stronger need for direct answers and clear facts.

Should I block AI crawlers?

That is your choice. Blocking them can lower your chance of being used or quoted. Some owners block them to protect their work. Decide with your goals in mind.

Does FAQ markup help?

A visible FAQ helps readers, and clear question and answer text is easy for tools to read. Google now shows FAQ rich results only for a small group of sites, so do not expect special results from the markup alone.

How do I know if I am being cited?

Ask AI tools your customers' questions and read the links they show. Also watch the visits to your site from AI tools in your analytics or server logs.
